"TELL YOUR PARENTS, YOUR GRANDPARENTS, YOUR NEIGHBOUR — ANYONE WITH AN IPHONE." 09:38, 29 May 2025 UK data specialist Safe Data Storage is warning iPhone users to install the
latest iOS 18.5 update immediately. Apple confirmed that the software includes a fix for a critical vulnerability that could let hackers gain access to personal content such as photos,
messages, and app data. A spokesperson for Safe Data Storage said: "Apple acted fast, but users need to act too. Updating your device is one of the most important things you can do to
protect your private information. Tell your parents, your grandparents, your neighbour — anyone with an iPhone. These updates aren’t optional anymore — they’re your first line of
defence." The update, available for iPhone XS and later, addresses a flaw that Apple describes as involving "processing a maliciously crafted image [that] may lead to unexpected
app termination or corrupt process memory." Apple confirms it has resolved the issue through "improved input sanitisation." Safe Data Storage added: "Many people assume
iPhones are immune to serious threats, but no device is immune to a vulnerability like this. If someone sends you a seemingly innocent image and your phone hasn’t been updated, it could
silently cause damage or allow access to your private files." Apple says iOS 18.5 "includes important security fixes and is recommended for all users." While no known
exploitation has been reported yet, security professionals note that vulnerabilities like this are often discovered and exploited quickly after being made public. "The longer someone
delays updating, the longer they leave that door open," Safe Data Storage adds. "And many people – especially grandparents or those less tech-savvy – don’t realise just how
important these updates are." HOW TO INSTALL THE IOS 18.5 UPDATE If you're not familiar with iPhone updates, here’s how to check your software: * Open the Settings app (the grey
gear icon). * Tap General, then tap Software Update. * If iOS 18.5 appears, tap Download and Install. It’s recommended that all iPhone XS and newer models complete the update as soon as
possible. Older relatives or users unfamiliar with Apple settings may need help from a friend or family member to complete the process safely. Beyond the update, there are simple ways to
make your iPhone more secure in everyday use. Below is a list by Safe Data Storage. 1. TURN OFF MESSAGE PREVIEWS ON THE LOCK SCREEN This stops sensitive messages from appearing while your
phone is unattended. How: Go to _Settings > Notifications > Messages > Show Previews_, then set to Never. 2. USE TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION FOR YOUR APPLE ID Article continues below
This adds extra protection, even if someone knows your password. How: Go to _Settings > [your name] > Password & Security_, then enable Two-Factor Authentication. 3. LIMIT APP
ACCESS TO PERSONAL DATA Many apps ask for access to contacts, photos or location without needing it. How: Go to _Settings > Privacy & Security_, then review each section and remove
permissions where unnecessary.
