Join us on WhatsAppA fresh round of road closures has been lined up as work on a major Leicestershire town bypass scheme nears completion. The Melton Mowbray Distributor Road is ultimately intended to divert
traffic from the busy town centre, and accommodate the extra vehicles resulting from housing developments in the area.
At nearly 4.5 miles in length, the road is the biggest ever highways project carried out by Leicestershire County Council. It is expected to be completed later this year, with an estimated
cost to authority of around £130 million, with the Government putting up around £50 million of that price tag. The work to date has included a number of disruptions for drivers around Melton
to allow the route, and the roundabouts and bridges scattered along it, to be constructed.
Now, Leicestershire Council Council, in its role as local highways authority, has announced what it has said is “anticipated to be” the final “round of closures needed” for the project.
These are set to take place over the school summer holiday when less traffic is expected to be on the roads.

St Bartholomew’s Way will shut from 6am on Monday, June 16, until 7pm on Sunday, September 28. This will be between its junction with the A606 Nottingham Road and its junction with Southwell
Close, the council said.
The B676 Saxby Road is set to close from 6am on Tuesday, June 24, and reopen on Sunday, September 28. A diversion route will take drivers via the A607 to the A1, and vice versa, and will be
“clearly signed”.

diversion will be signposted via the A606 to the A46, A46 to Dalby Intersection, A6006 to Melton and vice versa. There will also be no pedestrian or cycling access, with that diversion from
Brampton Road to Southwell Close.
The council is also warning residents and drivers that the layouts of these roads will be different once they reopen, with people urged to “take care”. The closures are to allow the final
two roundabouts to be built and the roads resurfaced, the authority said.
New leader Dan Harrison said: “We know that planned road closures this summer will mean some temporary travel disruption in and around the town and we’d like to thank everyone affected in
advance for their patience. In the longer-term, the new road will help to ease congestion in Melton’s busy town centre, reduce congestion, improve access to housing, leisure and employment
hubs and keep HGVs away from unsuitable rural routes.”
