Uninsured driver smashed into parked car after downing vodka

A drunk uninsured driver smashed into a parked car after "relationship troubles" led to him drinking vodka in the morning. Leicestershire Police were called to the incident in

Overton Road in Humberstone, Leicester, at 11am on Wednesday, May 14. Driver Canny Hitendra failed a breath test at the scene and was arrested and taken to a police station. He gave a

breathalyser reading at the station of 100 microgrammes per 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes. The officers also discovered the Mazda he was driving was not insured. READ

the UK in 2018 under the EU resettlement scheme. Harvinder Gahir, representing Hitendra, said due to the criminal conviction his client would face "difficulties" if he wanted to

stay in this country. He said: "What he has done is completely out of character. He had difficulties in his relationship and he'd had three glasses of vodka with mixer. He'd

drunk alcohol and driven. He's put a lot of things in jeopardy, including his work." He said Hitendra, who pleaded guilty to drink-driving and having no insurance, had been working

constantly since arriving in the UK, working through a Leicester employment agency. He said his client was doing all the hours he could and sending money back to his family overseas. Mr

Gahir asked the magistrates not to sentence his client to unpaid work so that he could continue working all possible hours to support his family. The magistrates agreed. Chair of the bench

Andrew Compton told Hitendra: "Drink-driving is a very serious offence that collision could have injured people." Hitendra, of Parry Street, Humberstone, was fined £526 and ordered

to pay a £210 victim surcharge and £85 costs. He was banned from driving for 28 months.
