SATURDAY, APRIL 17 WALNUT INVITATIONAL MEET At Mt. San Antonio College La Verne Damien swimmers set three meet records as the Spartans won the boys’ title for the third year in a row and
Glendora’s Courtney Eads set two meet records to lead the Tartans to their first girls’ title in the third annual Walnut Invitational on Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College. Damien junior
Michael Carter set two meet standards while winning the 100 freestyle in 47.97 seconds and the 200 freestyle in 1:45.11. His 100 time is the second-fastest in Damien school history behind
older brother John Carter’s 47.69, established when he was a junior in 2001. Carter’s efforts helped the Spartans finish with 365 points, well ahead of second-place Upland, which scored 302
points. The Highlanders were folowed by third-place Walnut with 221 points, Claremont with 207 and Alta Loma with 203. The Spartans won two of three relay races despite the absence of
sprinters Grant Miller and Steven Donohoe, who were competing in a water polo tournament in Northern California. Damien had another meet record set by its 200 medley team of David Williams,
Tommy Stoughton, Carter and David Fahey, who won with a time of 1:41.93. Dan Perdew, Williams, Carter and Stoughton also won the 400 free relay in a quick 3:18.41. Williams won the
backstroke in 55.70 seconds. Eads, a senior, set meet records in the distance freestyles, clocking 1:54.03 in the 200 free and 4:57.31 in the 500 free for Glendora, which scored 325 points
to hold off second-place Upland. The meet’s defending champion had 312 points. Temple City finished third with 228 points, followed by fourth-place Walnut with 217 and Glendora St. Lucy’s in
fifth place with 188 points. Glendora also got a meet-record time of 58.78 from junior Nicole Shipman in the 100 backstroke, and the Tartans won all three relay races to cement their
victory. _--Lauren Peterson_ BOYS TEAM: 1. Damien, 365. 2. Upland, 302. 3. Walnut, 221. 4. Claremont, 207. 5. Alta Loma, 203. 6. Glendora, 166. IND: 200 MEDLEY RELAY--1. Damien, 1:41.93*; 2.
