Huskies avenge stanford blowout

Anthony Washington made two free throws with 7.8 seconds left to help Washington to a 73-68 victory over Stanford, on Saturday at Seattle. With the win, the Huskies ended a losing streak at

10 to Stanford and avenged a 105-60 drubbing at the hands of the Cardinal last season at Maples Pavilion. That loss was the third-worst defeat in school history. “I’ve never lost by that

much in my life at any level,” Washington guard Will Conroy said. “That game was still sitting in my mind.” Conroy led the Huskies, 7-8 overall, 2-4 in the Pacific 10, with 19 points, eight

rebounds, four assists and three steals. The win was Washington Coach Lorenzo Romar’s 100th. He is 100-96 in seven seasons. Doug Wrenn scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half for

Washington in a game that remained close throughout. Neither team led by more than seven points and there were 14 lead changes. The Cardinal (12-5, 3-2) made a critical mistake trailing by

three with 7.8 seconds left. Julius Barnes got the ball needing a three-point basket to tie the score and attempted a jump shot from two feet inside the three-point line. Anthony Washington

pulled down the rebound, was fouled and iced the game with his free throws. Stanford Coach Mike Montgomery was furious that Barnes took the shot, ignoring a teammate who was wide open behind

the line. “We were down three,” Montgomery said. “We had [Matt] Lottich on a drop and [Barnes] took the shot. You have to have a better decision than that.” Said Romar: “This is the kind of

victory we need in the Pac-10, especially at home. Our ability to knock foul shots down kept the game close, and we needed all of them.” Josh Childress led Stanford with 18 points and

Lottich scored 15. Lottich scored 13 in the first half, including three of four from three-point range. But he played little in the second half because of foul trouble. Washington freshman

Brandon Roy, who was declared eligible before Thursday’s game against California, played in his first game as a Husky. He had four assists and two rebounds in five minutes. California 76,

Washington State 63 -- Joe Shipp scored 33 points to help the Bears (12-2, 5-0) win at Pullman, Wash. The 5-0 start in conference is California’s best since the 1956-57 Bears started 10-0 in

the Pacific Coast Conference. Washington State (5-10, 0-6) lost its sixth in a row and played without two starters and two key reserves because of injuries. Marcus Moore, the team’s scoring

leader this season, played on a bad ankle and scored nine points, 11 below his average. No. 22 Oregon 79, Oregon State 68 -- Luke Ridnour and Luke Jackson combined on a second-half surge

that gave the Ducks a win at Eugene, Ore. The Ducks (12-4, 2-3) struggled in the first half, but led by as many as 12 in the second. Ridnour had 28 points -- 19 in the second half -- and 11
