General Manager Jack Ferreira indicated Monday that the next order of business after today’s noon trade deadline could be a contract extension for Teemu Selanne.

“Could be,” said Ferreira, whose policy is not to renegotiate contracts. “He’d be one exception. He’s a pretty important guy to this franchise. We’ll see. Right now, I’m worried about

trades.”

Selanne has two years left after this season on a five-year deal he signed while with the Winnipeg Jets in 1995-96. The Jets traded him to the Ducks for Oleg Tverdovsky and Chad Kilger on

Feb. 7, 1996.

“He’s got, what? 49 goals,” Ferreira said. “[Sunday] was his third hat trick. I think that tells it all right there.”

Ferreira hit the phones hard again Monday, but said there was nothing to report.

“It could be [the next call] or at 11:30 in the morning,” Ferreira said when asked if he expects to make a deal.

Defenseman Dmitri Mironov and winger Scott Young are the names most often rumored to be traded. But Monday evening that’s all they were, just rumors.

The Detroit Red Wings reportedly are interested in Mironov, who could help their power play for the playoffs. Young could be headed just about anywhere. The Ducks hope to acquire a

defenseman and a scorer to ease the burden on Selanne, the NHL’s leader with 49 goals.

“I’ve made a lot of calls, just pecking away,” Ferreira said. “Somebody’s going to trade somebody and then you’ll probably see a domino effect.”

Last season, the Ducks acquired Mark Janssens from the Hartford Whalers and Richard Park from the Pittsburgh Penguins in separate trades right before the deadline.

The Ducks then traded Janssens to the New York Islanders in a six-player deal hours before the Olympic roster freeze Feb. 6. Park is playing with Cincinnati of the American Hockey League.
