TWA Ruling Upheld: A federal appeals court panel ruled that Trans World Airlines Inc. had not bargained in bad faith to precipitate and prolong a strike by flight attendants in 1986. Members
of the Independent Federation of Flight Attendants went on strike March 17, 1986, after Carl C. Icahn, who had taken control of TWA, bargained unsuccessfully for cost-saving concessions
from the union. After a federal mediator could not resolve differences, Icahn cut flight attendants’ wages 22%, increased working hours and changed rules. The union went to court, accusing
TWA of bargaining in bad faith and seeking reinstatement to jobs lost in the strike and back pay at pre-strike rates. MORE TO READ
