It looks like a building that has been vandalised incrementally over the years. And if it were not an office where employees do come regularly, it would have seemed a haunted house. Welcome
to the sericulture building in Pusnag, Pattan. Built two decades ago in one of the most scenic spots in Pattan, the building was set afire some years ago by “miscreants”. “The government
never bothered to repair it,” said Muhammad Shafi, a local resident. The walls have developed cracks and some of the windows have been either stolen or vandalised. It doesn’t have a washroom
and the employees relieve themselves in the open. “During rains we take shelter in the home of some villager,” said Sher Ali Mir, a field assistant. Baramulla deputy director sericulture
department Muhammad Iqbal Mir said, “I am also worried about safety of the employees as well as our equipment worth lakhs of rupees. I have informed the higher authorities many a time about
the problems.” He said they have also been demanding irrigation facilities so that the land could be used for planting trees.
