A 'great' Guildford town centre pub which is a staple for residents is set to shut for around four weeks for a "six-figure" refurbishment. The George Abbot pub, at the
bottom of Guildford High Street, announced it will be closed from Monday, February 24 until mid-March while the building receives a makeover and its facilities undergo refurbishments. The
pub is arguably a staple of Guildford's town centre, being popular among many sports fans for having multiple television screens. Many reviewers have described their experience as
"great" with "friendly" staff and a "lovely choice" of food on the menu. Jay Romano, general manager of the pub said: "The George Abbot will close for a
short period (from Monday, February 24) whilst we make a six-figure investment into the pub. "The pub will reopen its door to the public in mid-March following the completion of
exterior and interior improvements, including new signage, lighting and a full refurbishment of the toilets. We look forward to welcoming our customers back to the pub very soon." The
Greene King-owned pub last received a major makeover in March 2014 when staff were forced to close for two months following extreme flooding of the River Wey. Until the early 1990s the
building went by the name of 'The Greyhound' and was predominantly a gay bar. The George Abbot is expected to reopen on Friday, March 14, however this may change, with the manager
suggesting they are more generally aiming for a "mid-March" reopening.
