Two weekends of road closures as well as multiple overnight closures are planned in Surrey near the M25 as part of a major £42m road improvement scheme in preparation for 3,000 homes to be

built in the surrounding areas. The first phase of these works began at the start of April on the A320 and were expected to take around ten weeks to be completed. Now in the final few weeks

of this timeframe; drivers should expect multiple weekend and overnight closures of roads included as part of these works. The A320 between Chertsey and Ottershaw which has previously been

described as "busy" by Surrey County Council (SCC) is currently receiving "major upgrades" which began on April 7. Two weekends-worth of road closures will take place in

June as part of these works. The A320 Guildford Road will be closed in both directions, between the Ottershaw and St Peter's Way roundabout. The first closure will take place from 8pm

on Friday, June 6 until 5am on Monday, June 9. The second closure will come from 5am on Saturday, June 14 to 5am on Monday, June 16. SCC has said these closures are required to divert the

underground services that lie beneath the Guildford Road. The official diversion route over these weekends for northbound traffic read as follows are are to be reversed for southbound

traffic. Travel along Murray Road, Spinney Hill and into Addlestone along Church Road and Station Road, before turning left onto the A317 Woburn Hill and then joining St Peter's Way

towards St Peter's Hospital. A series of overnight closures are also planned on St Peter's Way and Guildford Road over the next few months. Starting at 10pm Thursday, June 5 to 5am

on Friday, June 6 with a closure of St Peter's Way westbound between M25 junction 11 and the St Peter's roundabout. SCC have said a signed diversion will be in place on the St

Peter's Way eastbound into Chertsey, Chertsey Road, the A317, and Guildford Road. Additionally, information related to the next few overnight closures will be shared in due course on

the contractors construction website related to the project. Ahead of these closures, a spokesperson for the county council has said: "Roads around the A320 and diversion are expected

to be busy during the closures. If you plan to travel, please check traffic before setting off and leave extra time for your journey wherever possible." "If you can, please leave

extra time if travelling to St Peter's Hospital. Additionally, access will be maintained at all times for the ambulance station." The £41.8m A320 North of Woking improvements

project include improvements to four key junctions and two road connections. The works will implement "significant safety and accessibility enhancements", including wider footpaths

and cycleways, enhanced pedestrian crossing points and better access to public transport. These improvements are seen as a vital development in the Runnymede 2030 local plan, in

"support(ing) delivery" of around 3,000 homes which are to be constructed across ten sites in the areas around the A320. The local plan involves the construction of over 7,500

homes by the end of the decade, with the ongoing road improvements aiming to, in many ways, ready the surrounding area for this significant influx of homes coming in the area. The first

phase of the A320 North of Woking improvements, which are nearing their expected end, having began on April 7, and were planned to last for ten weeks. Once completed the improvements consist

of: * Construction of an extra lane from the St Peter's Way roundabout towards the M25 on the A320 eastbound * Widening of the approach onto the St Peter's Way roundabout from the

M25 on the A320 westbound * Widening of the northbound approach onto the St Peter's Way roundabout from Guildford Road, * Widening of the footpath from the St Peter's Way

roundabout towards St Peter's Hospital * Resurfacing of the entire St Peter's Way roundabout TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE COMPLETE LIST OF WORKS AS PART OF THIS SCHEME, YOU CAN READ A

PREVIOUS ARTICLE ON THE PROJECT HERE: Contract awarded for £41m Surrey road upgrades near M25 to make way for construction of 3,000 new homes When the contract for the project was awarded

earlier this year, Gareth McLaverty, Project Director at GRAHAM said: "The A320 North of Woking project is a vital infrastructure investment that will not only improve safety and

traffic flow but also unlock thousands of much-needed new homes in the region." The Runnymede local plan aims to build over 7,500 homes in the borough by the end of the decade. The

aforementioned 3,000 homes are seen as a crucial component of this plan, and these road improvements are taking place to ready the area for this influx in homes.
