Jeremy Clarkson defended the £24 price tag on his pub's steak pie, encouraging those who complain to "Enjoy your chlorine". The presenter of 'Clarkson's Farm'
explained that he pays top dollar for the high quality beef from local farmers used in The Farmer’s Dog’s menu item, which has been a feature of the Amazon Prime show. Asserting his support
for British farming, he emphasised that customers not interested in quality meat can opt for less appetising options elsewhere. When questioned by a doubtful punter via social media about
the pie’s affordability, Clarkson retorted: "Have you seen beef prices right now? If you could make it for less, I'll give you a job." And addressing another commenter who
asked if the cows were his, Clarkson added: "Some are. Most come from other farmers in the area and we pay a premium. We are here to back British farming. If you don't want to do
that, fine. Enjoy your chlorine." Clarkson's popular series showcased the struggle farmers have with escalating costs as he endeavoured to open the establishment close to his
Diddly Squat Farm in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. And his boozer, the Farmer's Dog, has proven popular ever since it featured on the show. The fare on offer includes 'steak pie,
mash, carrots, seasonal greens and Hawkstone gravy', priced at £24. The pub's online message promises: "Our menu is made entirely with ingredients produced on British farms.
It'll change based on what's in season, but it'll always be absolutely f****** delicious. Take a look and see what takes your fancy." Some detractors on social media
labelled the pie 'f****** extortionate' and criticised the owner for being 'tight', with one disgruntled commenter saying: "At least Dick Turpin wore a mask."
However, the majority of comments were supportive, particularly from customers who had sampled the pie, with suggestions that the price could even be increased given the quality. One
satisfied diner shared on Twitter: "Was the best £24 spent! Fantastic meal there, great food and all local produce - stop whinging!". Praise continued with another posting:
"Ah! But what pie!", and another chimed in, saying: "Worth every penny." A frequent patron of Clarkson’s establishment quipped: "Best pub in the world is not for
you, stick to McDonalds." Vicky Entwistle, 56, famous for her role as Janice Battersby in Coronation Street and her stint in Celebrity Big Brother, commented: "I think that price
is reasonable...you want to visit my village pub up north the prices are through the roof." Meanwhile, Mark Polden, an economics student, observed: "Most pub food is garbage,
quality food, service, and a pleasant environment are expensive to provide and in the greater scheme of things £24 isn't a lot for that combination." So would you be tempted to
order the pie? Let us know in the comments section below.
