'gorgeous' period drama compared to the crown shows 'netflix is as good as bbc'

Set in the 1870s, this period drama takes you back to the unusual beginnings of Britain's favourite sport. The English Game is a 2020 miniseries that explores the early happenings of

British football as we know it today, with a strong focus on class divide. Both football and period drama fans alike are impressed by the series' ability to convey the class system of

the time and the passion for the much-loved sport. One viewer took to Rotten Tomatoes to write: "Greatly enjoyed the story, characters, setting, drama, and resolutions. Beautifully

crafted." While another person added: "Absolutely superb. The best series I've watched in a while. Captivating and enthralling." The film follows the early days of the

sport, as football is still just a game and considered an amateur sport dominated by the upper class. A revolution is brewing, as James Walsh, the owner of his very own working-class team,

seeks out secretly talented footballers Fergus Suter and Jimmy Love to join his team ahead of their big game. They're set to go up against the Old Etonians, who help to run the FA and

have players who are also board members. As they continue to break the precious rules, a rise of the working-class player is forming, and football is about to change forever. Fergus Suter,

played by Kevin Guthrie, is thought to be the first recognisable professional footballer and, despite being Scottish, moved to England, where he eventually played for Blackburn Rovers.

Arthur Kinnaird is a key character throughout the series, portrayed as a wealthy aristocrat and star player of the Etonians team. He is based on the real-life man who played a pivotal role

in the development of the game and was played by Edward Holcroft, best known for his role in The Kingsman. A critic said: "The costume and production design is immersive; it's all

quite gorgeously shot, and the whole stands alongside The Crown in showing that Netflix can get this stuff done every bit as well as the BBC." Another viewer wrote: "Good show. It

starts off a little slow but quickly picks it up and turns into a very enjoyable show. Really good acting, and the story keeps you engaged. It is based off of real events, and it seems like

they did a decent job of portraying them. Some of the side plots seem a little useless, but that's just par for the course. Definitely a good watch." The short series covers a lot

of ground in just six short episodes but makes it easy to binge all at once for those looking for their next fix of period drama TV. Although some viewers have claimed the show isn't
