'exquisite' period drama leaves netflix fans 'enchanted'

Those who love nothing more than sitting back and being transported back in time are in luck because this 'impeccable' period drama is streaming now on Netflix. The Dig is a 2021

film that reimagines the successful novel by John Preston, retelling the events of the 1939 excavation of Sutton Hoo in Suffolk. Those in the area were made to evacuate by archaeologists

after an undisturbed ship was discovered containing a load of mysterious Anglo-Saxon artefacts. An impressive lineup of actors stars in the film, including Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes

as Edith Pretty and Basil Brown. It sees a local landowner, Edith, desperate to tackle the burial mounds at her rural estate, with the help of a self-taught archaeologist, Brown, whom she

hires in hopes of finally getting to the bottom of it. With a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes, viewers are left impressed by their 'excellent' performances. One review says:

"This isn’t my type of film usually, but I found it to be enchanting and captivating. Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes are excellent, as is the young lad. A window on a dangerous time

but also captures the charm of England back then , when everyone had manners and everything was done with TLC." Another viewer wrote: "I just watched The Dig, and I have to say,

it’s such a beautiful and moving film. I knew a little bit about the Sutton Hoo discovery, but this film really brings the whole story to life in such a heartfelt way. It’s not just about

the archaeology; it’s about the people behind it and everything they went through." At the beginning of their professional agreement, Edith offers the same money Brown received from the

Ipswich Museum, but once he states that this is inadequate, they decide on a higher rate for his work. Before he was cycling from far away every day until Edith offered him lodgings on the

grounds, alongside her driver and cook, and gave him two of his own helpers. His former employees are trying to convince him to rejoin them in their own discoveries, but Brown refuses and

continues to dig alone. Soon after, he is amazed to uncover mysterious iron rivets from a ship that imply the burial on onsite may have belonged to someone of high importance, such as a

previous king, and his new findings take him on a journey they could have never envisioned. A viewer claimed: "Beautifully shot and carefully written. It's a well-crafted story

about discovery, death, love and hope, set in a turbulent time where Great Britain is about to go to war with Germany. Though this historical film suffers from pacing issues, particularly in
