Stoke City have confirmed the appointment of former Reading FC coach John O'Shea to the club's first team coaching staff. The 41-year-old has returned to the Championship, having
spent two years with Reading in a similar role, while he is also assistant manager of the Republic of Ireland's U21 team. He left Royals last summer after three years with the club,
firstly as a player before spending two years as a first-team coach, with the former Manchester United defender stating that he felt it was the right time for his family to return to
Manchester and for him to start a new challenge. READ MORE: THREE PLAYERS WHO COULD LEAVE READING FC BEFORE THE END OF SUMMER TRANSFER WINDOW He has been assistant manager of Republic of
Ireland's U21 team since April 2020, working with Jim Crawford, but now he has returned to the club scene with Stoke, with Potters boss Michael O'Neill speaking highly o the
41-year-old. He said: “John is at the start of his coaching career. He had a spell at Reading after his career as a player drew to a close and is involved at international level. I think he
will bring a great deal to us. In coaching you bring your standards as a player and I think everyone knows that John O’Shea had extremely high standards as a player. “He had a fantastic
playing career but he’s very keen to learn as a coach as well and he has settled in extremely well. I think he brings the right mix of not only his expertise but also his personality and
he’s a good person to have around, particularly around young players.” O'Shea spent more than a decade with Manchester United as a player, before signing for Sunderland, where he spent
seven years, prior to joining Reading in 2018. He played 11 times for Royals before announcing his retirement from playing in April 2019, moving in to coaching with the club. READ NEXT
