Sheffield Wednesday could be facing a three-window transfer embargo, with the EFL officially charging them over unpaid wages. The Owls have been given 14 days to respond to the EFL charge
for alleged multiple breaches of EFL Regulations relating to payment obligations. Owner Dejphon Chansiri has also been charged with allegedly causing the club to be in breach of EFL
Regulations despite his commitment to fund the cash requirements of the club. The charges relate to the club failing to pay their staff their full wages in two of the last three months. The
charge would bring a three-window transfer embargo if they are found to be in breach of the regulations. It’s the latest financial debacle at Hillsborough, with supporters growing
increasingly frustrated with the club’s ownership. According to the Sheffield Star, ‘many players, coaches and club staff either unpaid or only partly paid for the month of May’ as of the
time of the EFL’s charge being confirmed via a statement on Tuesday evening. The report claimed many non-footballing employees had been paid just £700 of their expected salary. An email from
the club was sent explaining that an ‘emergency fund’ had been put in place for those facing immediate financial hardship, and on Monday night a letter was sent out across the club
apologising for the continued delay, stating that the issue ‘is yet to be resolved’ and that payments would be made ‘as soon as funds are received’. The charge comes 24 hours after an EFL
spokesperson told the Star: “The situation is clearly concerning for all those directly affected. In respect of any action to be taken against the club, the League is now considering all the
options available in accordance with its Regulations.”
