A Redcar nursery is seeking planning permission to expand. The Bee Hive Nursery, in Waveney Road, which is in the grounds of Outwood Academy Redcar, is proposing a single storey, detached

modular building for use in conjunction with its existing premises. The plans were recently lodged with Redcar and Cleveland Council with a public consultation on them underway. The Bee Hive

Nursery replaced the former Sunny Days nursery, which was forced to close in 2023 due to financial difficulties after being established 46 years in the area. An application said it would

provide more childcare places, there already being a waiting list for local parents. It said the nursery currently had a total of 32 places looking after children aged between zero years and

five, and the extension would create seven more places. The move would also create two full-time and two part-time jobs at the nursery, which is open Monday to Friday between the hours of

7.30am and 6pm. Manager Rachel Donnelly said after acquiring the building, the new nursery opened in September last year and it was the fulfillment of a dream for her and another 'queen

bee' Amanda Reynolds - the pair having both been childminders in Redcar for the past 12 years. She said: "Together with long-time friends we've created a nurturing, home from

home environment where children can feel loved and welcomed. "With spaces filling quickly, we've been blown away with how busy we've become, which led us to expanding the

nursery. We’re excited to embark on this journey, being able to provide more spaces for children, with the planning application in progress." A comment from a neighbour on the

application expressed concern about additional traffic being generated. It said parking was an issue and space was already at a premium in the vicinity of Waveney Road/ Kirkleatham Lane

around school times due to existing highway restrictions. Members of the public have until June 10 to comment on the nursery application. Earlier this year the council granted planning

permission for another nursery expansion at Ings Road Primary School, Redcar, which involved converting a former caretaker’s bungalow to create 13 more full-time equivalent childcare places.

The application was supported by the local authority’s director of children and families Danielle Swainston, who said further nursery places in the area were needed. FOR THE LATEST REDCAR
