Middlesbrough council’s website back up and running after ‘fault’

A council’s website was out of action for several hours but is now back up and running again. Middlesbrough Council's website was inaccessible during the morning of Monday June 2. The

“fault”, thought to have started on Sunday evening, caused problems for some residents. The website was functional again by approximately 1.30pm on Monday afternoon. While the website was

experiencing problems, locals were unable to access online forms and the council’s phone lines were also out of action. Internet users were met with a ‘connection timed out’ message, which

explained that the issue was a problem with the host website (www.middlesbrough.gov.uk), rather than residents' internet browsers. The council posted on their social media channels

during the morning to address the problem. At 11.40am on X (formerly Twitter), the council’s official account said: “The council’s website, online forms and phone lines are currently

unavailable due to a fault. We are working to restore our systems as soon as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience this may cause. We will provide updates as the situation changes.” In late

October and early November 2024, the council was hit by two cyber attacks in quick succession. There is no indication that Monday’s website problems are the result of a cyber attack. JOIN
