SELECT ewes which have had a trouble-free lambing, and keep their ewe lambs as replacements to help reduce concerns at next seasons lambing.
When sorting through ewes at weaning, Tony Petchey from SAC Aberdeen advises culling ewes which have had cervical or uterine prolapses, ringwomb or which required a caesarean. He also
believes that ewes which required assistance at lambing should be considered for culling as they may have difficulties in future.
"Ewes should also be selected on the basis of their teeth and udders – sheep with mastitis should not be retained," he says in Signet Beef and Sheep Notes.
Lame ewes should be treated at weaning, while chronic cases may need to be culled where they fail to respond to continued treatment.
"Also check for skin lumps and discharges, as caseous lymphadenitis is now present in some flocks."
