Fresh cows and heifers in high demand at border and lakeland sale - farmers weekly

Bidding reached 3,500gns at Border & LakelandHolstein Club show and sale, Carlisle last week.   Prices averaged £1,922.28 for a total clearance,with buyers from ten counties and Ireland

attending a packed ringside.    Milk is in high demand so it was no surprise thatthe demand for fresh cows and heifers was strong despite the incredible latespring and the diminishing stocks

of winter forage.   Judge Andrew Wilson from Fife, Scotland awarded theHolstein Champion rosette to Boclair Xacobeo Elegance. Consigned by J. Brewster,Boclair Farm, Glasgow, she was sired

by Mario Xacobeo from a VG RegancrestElton Durham dam. She sold for a top price of 3,500gns to Messrs Kennedy ofWest Carngillan Farm, Ayrshire.   Champion B & W Jane Soulsby (Sponsor

Pfizer) Boclair Xacobeo Elecance, Mr Brewster (Vendor) and Mr Andrew Wilson (Judge) The Reserve Champion Boclair Goldwyn Romanti wasalso consigned by J Brewster. She was sired by Boclair

Goldwyn, a BraedaleGoldwyn son, and bred from Boclair Objective Hope EX94 – a leading brood cow withinthe Boclair herd. This powerful framed heifer was purchased by the judge for2,700gns.

Dumfries and sold for 2,000gns to an undisclosed buyer in Ayrshire,Scotland.  Guillyhill Babe had calved inJanuary for the second time and was classified VG86. Champion Ayrshire Jane Soulsby

Farm, Shotts.  She was classified VG86 in her firstlactation and had been calved since January giving 25kgs.  She had been AI at the start of April to DJMay sexed and sold for 1,700gns to

Messrs Buchanan of Laigh Kilphin Farm,Ayrshire.   The Champion Ayrshire went to Atley Hill M Pamelaconsigned by T C Alderson & Son, Scorton Road Farm, Northallerton, NorthYorkshire.  She

was sired by Lagace Modemand bred from one of the stars from the Great Yorkshire Show Haresfoot PamelaEX94-4E.  She sold for 2,000gns to MessrsHuchan & Son of Gerranton Farm of

Kirkcudbrightshire.   Champion Ayrshire Jane Soulsby (Sponsor Pfizer) Atley Hill M Pamela, Mr Alderson (Vendor) and Mr Andrew Wilson (Judge) Otherleading prices included a wonderful daughter

of Plain-O Durham Ross consignedby HM & D Hodgson, Wormanby Farm, Burgh by Sands, Carlisle.  Wormanby Ross Linda 2 placed third in awonderful class of junior heifers she oozed style and

class displaying thequalities needed to be special show heifer for the incoming summer show season.She sold for 3,150gns to an undisclosed buyer in South West Scotland.   The Stowbeck herd

owned by Skirwith Hall Farms,Penrith consigned three special heifers topping at 2,600gns for Stowbeck BonairDewdrop 2.  She was sired by KaronaBonair and was admired by numerous buyers for

her amazing udder, she now joinsthe herd of Messrs Forshaw of Meadowside, Lancashire.    First time consignors to the monthly club sale BMcMiken, Ernespie, Castle Douglas offered six

wonderful heifers perfectlysuited to large scale milk production. This excellent group from Ernespie  topped at 2,500gns for Ernespie Debs 18, shewas sired by Cogent Loader from a high

yielding Picston Shottle dam, who gaveover 11,000kgs as a three year old. She was also purchased by Messrs Forshaw.   Picston Shottle remains one of the great sires inthe business producing

progeny that milk producers value highly.  DI & FM Cannon, Espland Hill, Applebyconsigned two super heifers topping with Espland Shottle Avril 2, she was giving35kgs selling for 2,400gns

again to Messrs Forshaw.   Ploughlands Bonair Joan was sired by Karona Bonairand bred from the Joan family originally from the Leminton herd.  She was consigned by CJ & VM

Gillespie,High Ploughlands, Kirkbrampton and sold for 2,400gns to Messrs Stewart ofHalldykes, Dumfriesshire.   Regular consignor A.E.Milne & Son, EasterCoxton Farm, Llanbryde, Elgin

consigned five heifers topping with LhanbrydeCarmine 41.  She was a daughter of CogentLoader and bred from three generations of 13,000kgs dams, she sold for 2,400gnsand now joins the herd of

Messrs Kennedy.   CG Mair & Partners, Monyruy, Everton of Auchry,Aberdeen dispersed their prize winning herd in 2012 they consigned twentyheifers from their leading families all sired

by top sires.  These heifers had powerful frames and alldisplayed huge production potential, their top price went to Monyruy LoaderSusock sired by Cogent Loader selling for 2,300gns and

purchased by MessrsSomerville of Braehill Farm, Dumfriesshire.   JW Graves & Son, Home Farm, Tallentire,Cockermouth have been dispersing their herd in the monthly sales. They had sixcows

and heifers in milk topping at 2,100gns twice.  First was Roansbank Bolton Celia a daughterof Sandy-Valley Bolton fresh in her third lactation and bred from an ExcellentPicston Shottle.  It

was a heifer siredby Silky Powerplay who also sold for 2,100gns, she was bred from the samefamily and was purchased by Messrs Wilson of Oak Tree Farm, Cumbria.      Topping the Ayrshire

trade was a fancy udderedheifer consigned by M Young, Beuchan Farm, Keir, Thornhill she was sired byInch Sven and bred from a line of high testing butterfat and protein cows.  Keir Mains

Aero sold for 2,200gns and nowjoins the herd of Messrs Watson of High Mark Farm, Wigtownshire.
