But why not head off the beaten track and explore some of the most stunning abandoned spot?
Christ of the Abyss: Located in Italy, deep below the waters of the Italian Riviera, lies a huge bronze statue of Jesus with outstretched arms towers from the sea floor.
Originally sculpted by artist "Guido Galletti", it was made at the suggestion of Italian divers who wanted to bring life to the sea floor. The statue resides at the site of a tragic
accident. Diver Dario Gonzatti, the first Italian to use Scuba Gear died there in 1947.
Machu Picchu: This ancient estate is located high above the clouds on the mountains of Sacred Valley. It’s thought the city was built for the Inca emperor known as 'Pachacuti' in 1438.
It was unknown to the world until 1911 when it was discovered by an American historian. With over 200 buildings within the site, it’s a true wonder of engineering.
Be warned though, tourists have fallen to their death slipping off the narrow ledges and slopes.
Pripyat: This was once a bustling city in Ukraine and home to nearly 50,000 residents. But in 1986, the city’s nuclear power plant faced a meltdown causing a deadly explosion that sent waves
of radiation in every direction.
Within hours the city was full evacuated of all survivors. Residents were never able to return and life has remained untouched here ever since.

Door to hell: Also known as the Gates to Hell or Crater of Fire. This natural gas field is located in rural Turkmenistan. It was identified in 1971 by Soviet engineers and explored as a
possible drilling site. However, after finding gas and not oil, plans were abandoned. But after collapsing to form a cavern, the gas field was found to be producing very high levels of
methane gas.
To prevent these toxic fumes spreading, Geologists set fire to the pit and it has been burning continuously for over four decades. The crater is over 200 foot wide and 100 foot deep.
Bulgaria’s Communist Headquarters: They can be found deep within the Balkan Mountains of Bulgaria. The monument stands high on a 5,000 foot peak. It was opened in 1981 and used as a meeting
place and operations base for leaders.
After the party dissolved, the site was not maintained leading to a slow dis-use and decay.
