Fan favourite Masvidal took on the former Bellator and ONE FC welterweight champion in front of a sold-out crowd at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena early on Sunday morning. The build-up to the
Cuban-American’s clash with Askren - who was fighting for the second time in the UFC - was littered with trash talk, which led to it being dubbed the ‘People’s Main Event’. The fight didn’t
last long, though, as Masvidal obliterated the Iowa native with a vicious flying knee a mere five seconds into the contest. Clearly angered by Askren’s pre-fight antics a fired-up Masvidal
landed a further two unanswered blows before referee Jason Herzog waved off the contest. Askren was transported to the hospital after his first career loss but took the time to find the
funny side of his spectacular setback. He tweeted: “Well that sucked.” His tweet soon came to Masvidal’s attention, who responded with a comment as brutal as his flying knee. Masvidal’s
response featured a picture of him landing a right hand on the fallen Askren with the accompanying caption: “#fakenews Ben is still sleeping.” In the eyes of many, Masvidal’s final blows on
Askren were unnecessary as the former Olympic wrestler was already unconscious. The 34-year-old disagrees with that notion, saying: “They were super necessary. The referee hadn’t pulled me
off, and my job is to hit somebody until the referee pulls me off. "So to those people, I would say maybe don’t watch MMA. Go back to soccer.” Masvidal’s celebration rubbed several fans
up the wrong way, with many criticising him for basking in the glory a little too much. The Miami native, however, believes it was completely necessary given Askren’s attempts to get under
his skin. “That’s cool, but after a fight, I’m not allowed to showboat and rub it in your face, so you and guys like you can see it and say, ‘Maybe I don’t talk so much s**t, because when I
cross one of these real motherf*****s, they’re going to make me pay for it?'” Masvidal asked. “They’re going to embarrass the s**t out of me.” Given the emphatic manner Masvidal put
away Askren, one would assume their rivalry is now a thing of the past. But they’d be wrong to think so. “It’s not over for Ben, either,” Masvidal said. “He still has to deal with me. If I
see him at Whole Foods, I’m going to still slap that dude up, because I don’t like him.” Victory over Askren was Masvidal's second knockout win in the space of four months, his first
coming against Liverpool's Darren Till at UFC Fight Night 147. UFC 239 RESULTS: ALL THE RESULTS AND VERDICTS FROM JONES VS SANTOS
