Conor mcgregor to retire after ufc 229? Coach talks notorious’ future

McGregor makes his long-awaited return to the Octagon a week today in the main event of UFC 229, where he’ll challenge Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title he was stripped of in

April. The Irishman enters the bout on the back of a near two-year hiatus from the mixed martial arts world, an absence which was down to the birth of his first child and a much-maligned

multi-million-pound boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. So understandably, fans have concerns over whether McGregor’s grudge match with Nurmagomedov will be his last outing. Roddy himself

is in the dark over McGregor’s future plans but can foresee him sticking around if big-money fights are available to him. “It’s kind of always been a wait and see basis,” Roddy told _ESPN’s

 _Brett_ Okamoto._ “I’ve said after every single fight, ‘What do you think is next? And you don’t know. “It just depends on what comes up and what Conor fancies. I don’t know, but I always

say, ‘Every fight is bigger than the last.’ “And without a doubt, after this one, the next challenge will be bigger than the Khabib challenge. So, I’m excited. “I’m just like a fan when it

comes to that. I’m sitting at home saying, ‘What’s going to happen next?’ And then when you hear it, it’s like, ‘Right, let’s go. Let’s get on this again.’ We’ll see.” Like the majority of

the MMA world, Roddy is looking forward to McGregor returning to action and showing the world the new skills he’s acquired during his hiatus. “Just getting there and showing what us as the

coaches have been working on and what Conor has been working on,” he said when asked what he’s looking forward to the most about McGregor’s return. “And watching Conor going back in and

doing what he enjoys to do. “He’s at this best in that Octagon, and I think we’re going to see that on October 6. “So like everybody else, I’m just excited to see that and watch what

unfolds.” McGregor, 30, hasn’t set foot inside the cage since wrestling the lightweight title from Eddie Alvarez’s clutches with an emphatic second-round TKO victory at UFC 205, where he

became the promotion’s first simultaneous two-weight world champion. He was relieved of the title in April due to inactivity, which paved the way for Nurmagomedov to succeed him at the

summit of the division.
