England legend Jack Charlton was subjected to vile chants during a notorious match between Ireland and England that descended into chaos. Charlton, who was part of the victorious England
squad in the 1966 World Cup final against West Germany, later became Ireland's most successful manager, taking them to the European Championship and two World Cups. In an ill-fated
friendly in February 1995, Charlton led Ireland against England in Dublin. The game would become etched in infamy, not for the football but for the disgraceful scenes that unfolded. The
match at Landsdowne Road was plunged into disarray when England fans began rioting after Ireland's David Kelly scored. Hooligans hurled glass bottles, dismantled seats and other
missiles, with reports of Nazi salutes and one individual brandishing a knife. Despite Charlton's status as an esteemed figure in English football, his attempts to quell the violence
were met with cruel chants of "Judas, Judas" from the trouble-makers. The game was ultimately called off, with England's footballers not returning to play in Dublin until
2015. The nations are set to meet again today (Saturday, 5pm) in the Nations League. The shocking scenes, harking back to the grim days of the 1980s when such ugly incidents were almost
routine, plunged the reputation of English football back into disrepute. There were genuine fears that England might be stripped of its right to host Euro 96. Despite those fears, the event
proceeded without major incident. Kelly, the scorer during what play was possible back in 1995, reflected on Charlton's dismay at the violent outburst, saying: "Jack is very upset.
We all are." Charlton was adamant that the match should have continued. He said: "I have seen a lot in football but nothing like this. It is a disaster for Irish football but I
didn't want the game abandoned because what do you do with 2,000 English fans running around the town? "The English fans were being bombarded by some of their own. And they brought
out the worst in some of ours." An inquiry into the riot raised serious questions about the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) and police's response to the chaos and how it
could have been avoided. A lack of proper segregation, with some Ireland fans being given tickets in the away section, was among the issues highlighted. Ultimately though, it was determined
that extremist English hooligans, specifically those affiliated with the far-right group Combat 18, an offshoot of the British National Party, had orchestrated the disturbances.
