Serie A champions wanted to sell several players in order to fund their pursuit of Inter Milan outcast Mauro Icardi, which has since been thrown into doubt now that Mandzukic’s future has

been determined. The 33-year-old target man was given the option to take part in talks with United but failed to reach an agreement. Fans of the Red Devils were divided over whether the

former Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid forward would’ve made a good addition to their current squad, however, while Stan Collymore urged the club to pursue other deals instead while the

window was still open. Collymore told the Mirror: “Man United could end up with Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic and this is just sloppy seconds. “Fans get excited about names but managers

get excited about pieces of the jigsaw. “If Croatian striker Mandzukic wasn’t offered in a potential swap deal for Romelu Lukaku would he be someone United want? Surely not. “I am not

convinced Mandzukic is anything other than a big-name and United should walk away from a potential big mistake.” Those links to Mandzukic faded away toward transfer deadline day but that

didn’t stop United from having a perfect start to the new season. Maguire, Wan-Bissaka and James all impressed on their debuts in a 4-0 win over Chelsea, leaving Solskjaer delighted. He

said: “As we said to the boys before the game, we have found the way we want to play and a way we believe in. “You’ve just got to go out and do the same. We took risks but that’s the way

here. “You have got to go for it. It’s risk and reward and today we were rewarded. “We’ve signed three fantastic boys, three fantastic personalities and we are delighted with them.”
