Barcelona were sensationally beaten by Liverpool in the Champions League, with the Catalan giants losing 4-0 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate. The Catalan giants were far from their usual

best at Anfield and failed to progress to a first European final since 2015, with Divock Origi and Gini Wijnaldum scoring braces Liverpool did a successful job at nullifying Barcelona's

best players, with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez both shackled by Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip. But one Barcelona star did impress. Step forward, Arturo Vidal. No player stood out more

than the Chile international on a horrendous night for Ernesto Valverde's side. Back in the summer of 2014, Louis van Gaal was just getting started at Manchester United and was plotting

a move for a holding midfielder. Links to Vidal arose and the Red Devils were mulling over whether to land the Chile international and make him their midfield marvel. David Moyes'

gamble on Marouane Fellaini had not paid off. And Van Gaal knew his United side needed bite in the middle of the park. Vidal, who had helped Juventus regain their place at the summit of

Italian football, fit the bill. However, United paused at the last minute and went for transfers that were easier to complete. In came Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao, with the player

arriving for £29million after the club triggered his release clause. And Daley Blind also touched down at Old Trafford, though would spend much of his time playing in defence instead. Vidal,

however, would have been a better signing than either player. Against Liverpool he started slowly and, as the Reds ramped up the pressure early on, it looked as if his age would hinder him.

But he grew into the game, snarling at players in red and aiding in both defence and attack. Question marks were raised a year ago where Barcelona signed Vidal out of the blue from

Bundesliga side Bayern Munich. But he has been money well spent. And the La Liga giants have reaped the rewards - while United have drifted into mediocrity.
