Deontay wilder reveals toughest opponent he ever faced

Only Bermane Stiverne has lasted 12 rounds against the Bronze Bomber during their WBC heavyweight title showdown in 2015 – but he was flattened inside the first round when the pair met in a

rematch late last year. His record, 40-0 with 39 knockouts, might not contain the names of some of the division’s most elite fighters but it is difficult to deny his claim to be the most

destructive puncher on the planet. During an interview with Viceland’s Desus and Mero this week, the 32-year-old revealed the identity of the toughest opponent he has ever faced – and

surprisingly, it was not 12-round survivor Stiverne. “That’s easy – I’ve gotta give it to a Frenchman by the name of Johann Duhaupas,” Wilder explained. “He was the toughest. We went, I

think, 11 rounds and he was taking everything. I remember in the fight, I was like ‘damn, this motherf***** taking everything, he’s taking all these punches.’ “‘Alright, I’m gonna keep

their face like that, then you’re going to give it to them.” Wilder took on Duhaupas in September 2015 in the second defence of his WBC strap, battering the veteran Frenchman over 11 rounds

of action. He became the first man to stop Duhaupas in 34 fights – a feat that would be followed by Russian power-puncher Alexander Povetkin a year later. Duhaupas will return to action

later this month, taking on rising American heavyweight Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller on Danny Jacobs’ undercard in Brooklyn.
