into the fight because of his size, Ruiz was placed as a 12-1 overwhelming underdog, and considered to have slim chances of an upset. But after being knocked down for the first time in his

professional career, Ruiz rose to his feet and floored the champion twice in the same round, before repeating the feat in the seventh - leading to the stoppage. Afterwards, many were

surprised by Joshua’s reaction, as he stayed in the ring posing with the new champion and telling everyone how happy he was for the Mexican. And speaking to Bill Simmons on his self-named

podcast, Ruiz explained that he believes Joshua was simply embarrassed to have lost. The Briton was being touted for fights against WBC king Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury, but now those

prospects are extremely slim. “I just feel like he was embarrassed,” Ruiz told Simmons. “[He was] Like ‘man I just got beat up by this fat little kid’. “Afterwards he said he would rather it

be Deontay Wilder that knocked him out rather than Andy Ruiz, but it’s his night so... “Yeah, this chubby kid got him.” Joshua was stopped on his feet after being dropped twice in the same

round, having spat out his gumshield moments earlier. Ruiz explained that he didn’t know why the referee was stopping the fight, and hinted he was surprised to see the stoppage come when it

did. “I already had my hands out like this when I thought he was going to stop it,” he said with his hands raised aloft. “At first I was thinking ‘what is he doing?’ but then he was looking

at his team, and I said ‘yeah man, I’ve f*****g got it’. Everyone was booing me, and then it flipped.” Joshua exercised his right to an immediate rematch, with reports suggesting that he has

the choice of venue for the return fight. But Ruiz was quick to dispel those reports, declaring: “I’m in control of what happens. “They wanted to take it over there, but I want to keep it

here or in Mexico where all my people would be.”
