David E. Kelley - who also serves as a writer on the hit drama - said that it was “conceived as a one-off” and a follow up was never planned. However, following the phenomenal success of the
series starring Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley, things have now changed. In a recent interview, the 61-year-old US TV writer and producer said it was “possible” Big
Little Lies would be returning for a second outing. He explained: “There’s a lot of talk and thought being put into it now, but it was not something we planned on.” Kelley went on to tell
Variety‘s A Night in the Writers’ Room event yesterday: “We didn’t have to conceive of future storylines and protect characters and make sure that they could be redeeming in any kind of
perpetuity. “We could be true to the story and true to the characters…The irony is the reason we assumed it would be a one-off, because of all this major talent, they’re at the forefront
now of wanting that second season.” The interview comes as Kidman, 49, dropped a big hint about the show, saying that if the series did return that the storyline would have to be “powerful
and compelling”. While the fate of Big Little Lies is still uncertain, author Liane Moriarty - who wrote the 2014 novel that the HBO drama is based on - suggested that she is working on a
follow-up to the TV series. Moriarty, 50, told The Sydney Morning Herald earlier this year: "I have started to think about ways this could continue.” She went on to say: "The
producers have asked me to see if I can come up with some ideas. I wouldn't write a new book but perhaps a new story and then we'll see what happens." "I'm
absolutely open to it because, once I started thinking, it was too much fun to see what I could do and to see these characters again. And there's definitely places you can go."
Comedy-drama Big Little Lies has been critically-acclaimed since it aired in February in the US and had kept viewers captivated. _BIG LITTLE LIES IS AVAILABLE TO WATCH ON SKY ATLANTIC NOW._
