ANTRON MCCRAY? Antron McCray was played in the Netflix mini-series When They See Us by Caleel Harris and Jovan Adepo. Viewers watched his story develop from the time he was accused, to his

conviction in Ava DuVernay’s dramatisation.  He was accused when he was 15-years-old of the rape and assault of a young woman in 1989. One of the most harrowing parts of Antron’s story is

how his father Bobby McCray (played by Michael K Williams in the show) encouraged him to falsely confess to the crime.  He did give a videotaped confession despite there being no physical

evidence against him. Antron was convicted in 1990 and served six years in prison as a result of the conviction.  He was not exonerated until 2002 when convicted rapist Matias Reyes

felt numb.  “And then right after that I lost my religion, I started hating everything in the world.” He currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia, having left New York City after his release.

not saying it’s the right thing to do. I just stay busy. I stay in the gym. I ride my motorcycle.  “But it eats me up every day. Eats me alive. My wife is trying to get me help but I keep

refusing. That’s just where I’m at right now. I don’t know what to do.” Antron and the four other men later sued New York City for malicious prosecution, racial discrimination, and emotional
