Russell T Davies’ new drama Years and Years will see one family go through the ups and downs of life over the course of 15 years in Britain. And, actress Anne has revealed she was challenged
by the role of Muriel Deacon as she did something she doesn’t really like to do. Speaking at a Q&A at the BFI and Radio Times Festival last month, she explained Muriel will age quite a
lot over the course of the series. “I like to play people younger than me really,” she dished. “And I like to look much younger than me. That’s quite a challenge because I’ve never been,
well she gets older of course, she gets a lot older yes. “102, yes. And I said ‘My god, you’re going to have to do all that prosthetics thing,’ and they said, ‘No you look fine.’” But ageing
wasn’t the only aspect Anne found challenging, the actress explained she struggled to understand the technology in the series. “Yeah, I don’t like technology. I’ve never seen this episode,
we were sent it to look at and I struggled to get my iPad to work,” she laughed. “God knows what I’m going to be like in the future. But all that bit of talking to the walls, it took me a
while. “I thought they were all in the room with me at first didn’t I? I thought ‘Where is everybody?’ They said, ‘You’re talking to Señor.’ “That was unusual. You ain’t seen nothing like
this before have you ever, ever.” In the first instalment, fans will quickly learn Muriel has lost a daughter and a husband but little details about their absence is given. Speaking about
whether she thinks about a character’s backstory, Anne disclosed: “My daughter obviously died. “I vaguely thought my husband was some sort of businessman because we live in this huge house
it was very cold, it was huge, we couldn’t find our way around it half the time. “The money was in the house and then we lost it. She has a daughter that has died. “I like to think she is
the glue, and the house is the glue who holds the family together, I like that I make them come for my birthday party. “I don’t think a lot about it, I don’t think there was a lot to be
gained by thinking about Muriel’s past.” Viewers will have to watch the full series to see if any details of Muriel’s past is explored but the first instalment is sure to shock those tuning
in. The synopsis for the debut episode reads: “One night in 2019, politician Vivienne Rook causes a scandal on live TV. “At the same time, the Lyons family comes together as Rosie gives
birth to a son. Brothers Stephen and Daniel gather at her bedside with grandmother Muriel, all wondering what life will be like for little Lincoln.” It continues: “Five years in the future,
in the London of 2024, Stephen and Celeste worry about their daughter, Bethany, who declares herself a transhuman. “Back in Manchester, Daniel is now married to Ralph but is falling for a
Ukrainian refugee, Viktor. “When the Lyons gather for Muriel’s birthday, they’re interrupted by a call from their missing sister, Edith. She brings extraordinary news, and life for the Lyons
is about to change forever.” _YEARS AND YEARS AIRS TUESDAY ON BBC ONE AT 9PM._
