The US President said he had received several messages of support from around the world, particularly countries were are waiting to embark on trade negotiations. Britain is hoping to take
advantage of the “special relationship” and strike a trading agreement with Washington once it has cut ties with Brussels. And officials in London will have have been reassured by Mr Trump’s
tone as results from the crunch midterms were finalised in the US. He tweeted: “Received so many Congratulations from so many on our Big Victory last night, including from foreign nations
(friends) that were waiting me out, and hoping, on Trade Deals. Now we can all get back to work and get things done!” The Trump administration has indicated it is ready to create a new trade
deal with the UK after Brexit. US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer wrote three letters to Congress that stated the administration was looking to form new trade deals with the UK,
Japan and EU just weeks after the administration renegotiated a trade deal with Canada and Mexico. Mr Lighthizer said: “We will continue to expand US trade and investment by negotiating
trade agreements with Japan, the EU and the United Kingdom. “We are committed to concluding these negotiations with timely and substantive results for American workers, farmers, ranchers,
and businesses.” The letter about the UK explained the US is planning on starting talks “as soon as it is ready” following the UK’s exit from the EU on March 29. According to the letter, the
US is looking to develop “cutting edge obligations for emerging sectors where US and UK innovators and entrepreneurs are most competitive”. The UK is prohibited from negotiating trade deals
with other countries until after it leaves the EU. This is due to the UK still being a part of the single-market while Brexit negotiations are taking place. The other letters sent to
Congress explain the US is looking to “address both tariff and non-tariff barriers and to achieve fairer, more balanced trade” with Japan and the EU. The letter for Japan explained Japan “is
an important but still too often underperforming market for US exporters of goods”. However, it added the US has a £52.6bn trade deficit with Japan with the majority of that being from the
auto sector. In the Letter for the EU, it points out that the US and EU have a two-way trade the is “the largest and most complex” economic relationship in the world that amounts to £838.6bn
annually. It later added the US has a £115.4bn trade deficit in goods.
