Prosecco HORROR as 30,000 LITRES destroyed after tank explodes in Italy

A huge 30,000 litres - the equivalent of 40,000 bottles - of the popular sparkling wine were wasted as the liquid gushed out of the top of the tank.

The explosion was caused by the tank being overfilled, causing a giant fountain of fizz to flood the ground.

Footage posted on the Italian winery’s Facebook reveals the dramatic scenes as the bubbly liquid flows down the sides of the tank, sending Prosecco fans across the globe into meltdown.

More than 1,000 comments have been left on the video, which has been viewed more than one million times.

One Facebook user wrote: “If only we could have been there, with empty glasses at hand.”

And another added: “I’d be stood underneath with my mouth open and a bucket to catch it and take it home.”

One commented: “Get your glass ready and get over to Italy.”

And another described it as a “tragedy”.

Prosecco, which is made in Italy, has seen an increase in popularity in the UK in recent years.

But research released by accountants UHY Hacker Young in May revealed a slowdown in growth.

In 2017 the amount of sparkling wine on sale increased by 5 per cent from the year before, the smallest increase since 2011, according to the research.

James Simmonds, from UHY Hacker Young, said: “A 5 per cent increase in sales is not at all bad but that comes after several years of double digit growth. Unless the industry can revitalise

its image this year we may now be reaching ‘peak Prosecco’.

“It is hard for a luxury product to make the leap into the mass market without losing its reputation for exclusivity.

“A lot of English wine producers are now vying to capture the space left, as Prosecco moves to the mainstream.”
