Britain could see the warmest day of the year this weekend at the same time as parts of the country suffer flash floods and "very large hail". The Met Office has issued at least 17
flash flood warnings for the southeast of England, a region which will also see highs of 29C later today. This extreme weather follows similar scenes from yesterday, which saw sweltering
tempertures as well as more than 20,000 lightning strikes across the country. Becky Mitchell, a meteorologist at the Met Office, warned that flash flood wanrings are in place for this
evening, with hailstorms expected this afternoon. Ms Mitchell said: "This morning there will be heavy thundery showers affecting parts of Northern Ireland, pushing into Wales and the
Midlands and southeast England too. "These areas could see some torrential downpours, with some very large hail coming out of these thunderstorms so do take care if you’re heading out
this morning. "There will be brighter spells of sunshine, so it will feel very warm. Highs of 29 degrees in areas like London, even into the mid-20s in Scotland. "There will be a
yellow warning into this evening, with a warning of flash flooding too." The Met Office yellow warning covers all day today and expires at 6am on Monday. The most likely time for the
severe weather during the holiday weekend will be this afternoon. Events such as the Biggest Weekend in Swansea could be affected while there is the risk of properties being damaged by
floodwater, lightning strikes, hail and strong wind. Despite this gloomy forecast for today, Monday is looking "like a fine day with the potential for some very high temperatures"
according to the Met Office. Monday could see London hit 30C, surpassing the warmest day of the year so far which stands at 29.1C. The temperature was recorded at London’s St James’s Park on
April 19. Steamy air spilling in from Europe as high pressure wedges over the UK will set the tropical scene next week, according to the Met Office. Forecaster Alex Burkill said: "We
are expecting hot air to come in from Spain and France which will be quite unstable bringing thunderstorms which are already developing over the Continent."
