Extreme weather has struck Europe, sparking a bizarre blizzard storm across Spain this weekend. The unusual weather has triggered a terrfying and rare red weather alert in Spain, amid

warnings for snow, freezing temperatures, rain and high winds. BBC meteorologist Susan Powell said that two meters of snow could be dumped across the Iberian peninsula within just 24 hours.

There are fears that the snow storm could unleash the “most intense” snowfall recorded in Spain for years. The worst affected region is likely to be the Balearic Islands, where Mallorca will

be hit by 120 litres of rainfall in just 12 hours. This has prompted Mallorca to make emergency plans for severe floods. Popular tourist destinations like Ibiza and Formentera will also see

extremely heavy rain. JUST IN: AUSTRALIA RAIN FORECAST: RAIN BOMB DRENCHES MELBOURNE  Alicante and Valencia, which will see 60 litres fall in 12 hours, has been warned of an "extreme

risk situation" on the coast.  BBC's Powell said: “We are looking at particularly stormy weather this weekend in Spain. Potentially disruptive weather. “An area of low pressure

will come to sit on the western end of Spain, its centre in the Mediterranean. "This will pick up some strong winds which are likely to be disruptive for northern parts of Spain and

Balearics. She added: “The rain is likely to cause flooding and winds will cause disruption. “Further north, that low pressure keeps the rest of western Europe quiet.” Rubén del Campo, the

spokesman for Spain’s AEMET weather agency, said: “The next few days will be marked by a strong winter storm. "This could be the most intense that we have seen over the years.” He added

that Spain will see heavy snowfall, icy cold temperatures, rain and a strong sea storm with waves reaching more than 7 metres. Snowfall will be "widespread" across any region

above 400m.
