just below in some rural spots - and that is the theme as we go into the weekend. “It’s a case of sunny spells and blustery showers, but because it is pretty cold with any elevation, we
could see some of those showers turning increasingly wintry.” The BBC Weather forecaster said Saturday would be a windy day with scattered showers sweeping across the country throughout the
afternoon. She added: “By the end of the day a spell of wetter weather moving across southwest England and Wales, that will turn to snow over higher ground in Wales, northern England, and we
keep some snow showers threatening across the mountains of Scotland as well. READ MORE: BBC WEATHER: 'DANGEROUS' BLIZZARD TO SMASH EUROPE - DUMPING HEAVY SNOW UK snow latest:

“There'll be some hill snow from showers over the next few days but perhaps something more significant on Saturday night with a few cm's falling over higher ground of North
Midlands, northern England and Scotland.” The bitterly cold conditions are likely to continue in the country over the next couple of weeks according to the long-range forecasts. The Met
Office has warned of “snow occurring at times” mainly in the north, and over higher ground. The long-range weather forecast in place from December 18 to December 27 reads: “Rain in the
southeast will clear early Wednesday, with drier, brighter conditions following. UK snow: Facts of snowfall in Britain (Image: NC) “Away from the east and southeast, there could be some
overnight frost and freezing fog. Feeling cold with some winter sunshine. “In the west, there could be more cloud and outbreaks of rain. Thereafter, it will turn milder and unsettled again
as further bands of rain and strong winds edge in from the west. Changeable and sometimes windy conditions will probably last for the rest of the period. “Most of the rain will probably be
in the west with drier spells more likely in the east and southeast. Snow may occur at times in the north, mainly on high ground. "There remains a chance of brief drier, colder
interludes, with an increased risk of frost and fog.” UK snow forecast: Snow chart shows likelihood of white stuff hitting on Saturday (Image: NETWEATHER) It comes as leading bookmakers
slash odds on the UK to see a white Christmas this year. Coral's John Hill said: “We are less than two weeks away from Christmas Day now and the betting strongly indicates we could be
set for a White Christmas. “Certain cities have a greater chance of seeing snow, most notably Aberdeen and Glasgow, however, we have seen strong money in the betting for the white stuff to
come down in Manchester and London.”
