A low-pressure weather system will head eastwards with the threat of freezing fog and up to 60mph winds later in the week. Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell said: “It’s going to be a
cold start to the week with a touch of frost pretty much right across the country. “Some parts of Scotland and north-east England are quite likely to see temperatures of minus five. “It’s
going to feel pretty chilly and the cold snap will continue into the week. “Motorists will need a scraper in the morning to clear their windscreens and temperatures will really struggle with
a northerly airflow. “Scotland will be the coldest place with highs of no more than two or three degrees.” The cold snap and widespread frost see a “significant chance” of snow falling
during the middle of the week. Ex-BBC and Met Office forecaster John Hammond of weather trending said: “There is a significant chance of disruptive snowfall as moister air arrives from the
West from midweek. “Colder weather will arrive from the North, with East coasts prone to the odd wintry shower.” Northern parts of England and Scotland are set to be the worst areas affected
with highs of just 5C during the day. Met Office forecaster Becky Mitchell added: “Between Tuesday and Wednesday it will be cold and wet in the west and a bit drier in the east. “From
Thursday onwards there will be a chance of hill snow in northern areas. “While the temperatures will be around average, it will feel much colder." The wintery weather will see artic air
move in from the west towards the end of the week, causing travel chaos during the christmas getaway. Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “Widespread frosts and the chance of freezing
fog are expected. “Gales or severe gales with gusts up to 60mph in the West are expected into the weekend, with further heavy rain - and snow in the North, mainly on hills.” Sky weather
presenter Isobel Lang said: ”Warnings could be needed for wind, rain or snow - best keep an eye on the Met Office warnings if planning on travelling later in the week."
