John Bercow announced on Monday that he will resign either in the next general election or at the Brexit deadline of October 31, depending on which comes first. The Speaker has been a
divisive figure while in Parliament. He has been the Conservative MP for Buckingham since 1997, but once he was elected Speaker of the House in 2009 he was expected to renounce partisanship.
However, Mr Bercow is often accused of favouring the opposition, harbouring a ’pro-Remain bias’ and bullying MPs.
According to Mr Wilson’s 2011 article in The Telegraph, the Speaker is “happy to chastise others” and enjoys “putting down ministers he regards as a social or an intellectual threat” because
of his own sense of self-doubt.
Mr Wilson said: “According to a recent biography, this bombastic manner stems from a sense of insecurity.
“The author, Bobby Friedman, describes a strange psychological duopoly in this taxi driver’s son, whereby he is always the outsider trying to win respect from a certain group, yet
continually sabotaging his own attempts.”
Mr Wilson explained this insecurity comes from his background.
He notes: “The feeling of being an outsider was compounded by his education at a comprehensive, so different from the sort of gilded schooling enjoyed by many at the top of the Conservative
Party – an experience that seems to have left him with a peculiar mix of resentment and envy.”
The Speaker grew up in North London and his father worked as a mini-cab driver.

During his controversial time in Parliament, Tory MPs have said Mr Bercow is “making up rules as he goes along”.
Business Secretary Andrea Leadsom accused him of calling her a “stupid woman”, and there have been several rumours swirling over his decade in office about his potential defection to the
opposition.
In 2011 during the MP expenses’ scandal, it was revealed Mr Bercow spent £31,770 doing up his grace-and-favour Westminster apartment – despite him once claiming it cost £20,000.

He faced further criticism in 2009 when, shortly after his promotion to Speaker of the House, a guide he had written years before on “how to pick up drunk girls” was unearthed.
He wrote John Bercow’s Guide to Understanding Women when he was a 23-year-old Lambeth councillor.
Published in the Tory magazine Armageddon, in 1986, the article suggests: “Women will settle anything that breathes and has a credit card.”
A statement from the Speaker’s office read: “This article appeared in a magazine that specialised in being both funny and provocative.
Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Harriet Harman and Chris Bryant, all from the Labour Party, are believed to be putting themselves forward to replace Mr Bercow as Speaker.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson is also rumoured to be considering breaking a 230-year tradition by not making Mr Bercow a peer upon leaving his role.
