Diana and her ex-husband Prince Charles both pursued extramarital relationships throughout their turbulent marriage. For years, the couple kept their affairs out of the public eye by
sneaking them into their private royal homes. Charles reportedly used to arrange weekends away in his Gloucestershire home, Highgrove, to see Camilla Parker Bowles — now his second wife, and
known as the Duchess of Cornwall. His then-mistress lived just 11 miles away from the property at the time, making Highgrove an ideal getaway. The Princess of Wales spent her days in
Kensington Palace, in London, but as her marriage crumbled she began to conduct secret relationships in her royal apartment, too. Former butler to the late Princess, Paul Burrell, told the
Amazon Prime documentary ‘Serving the Royals: Inside the Firm’, how she relied on him for absolute discretion when trying to sneak her lovers in. Mr Burrell explained: “It was my duty to go
out in the middle of the night and ferry back people whom she wanted to be with in the boot of my car.” He emphasised how it was his personal car as opposed to a royal vehicle. He continued:
“On one occasion I did pick up someone at Kentucky Fried Chicken [KFC]. “Kensington Palace wasn’t that secure in those days. “I had a route. Halfway down the drive, I would flash my lights,
the police would lift the barrier and I would speed through. “I never stopped. “And I deposited my charge at a back door.” While security may not have slowed Diana's nighttime
rendezvous, her neighbour Princess Margaret reportedly used to sneak a peek at the new secret arrivals through her Palace curtains. Mr Burrell added: “On one occasion, the Princess, meeting
her lover at the back door, waved and said, ‘Goodnight Margo.’” Princess Margaret’s relationships were also put on full display during her time living on the royal estate, according to
insiders. READ MORE: MEGHAN MARKLE AND HARRY’S ‘THINLY VEILED’ ATTACK ON PALACE BACKFIRES She was raised under the “Kensington System” which prohibited her from meeting anyone her mother
deemed was undesirable — up until she unexpectedly inherited the throne at 18. Kensington Palace was also the place where Diana raised her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, and both
went on to live there as adults. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have set up camp there with their three children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis — and divide their
time between their London residence and their Norfolk home, Anmer Hall. Harry reportedly used to pop into their Kensington home regularly to play with his niece and nephews, while stealing
food from their family fridge — he lived in the nearby property, Nottingham Cottage, for years. However, he and his wife Meghan Markle decided to move into Frogmore Cottage in Windsor before
relocating across the Atlantic to California last year. Reports of a rift between the two brothers are said to have contributed to this move.
