The Chief Executive of Siemens UK was ridiculed after he tried to keep talking up the EU’s hard nosed negotiation stance with the UK over a proposed transition period after March 2019. The

EU has been criticised for trying to force the UK to remain in the single market by demanding Britain be given a harsher trade deal if they leave the bloc. After repeatedly giving his

support for Brussels bureaucrats, the Remoaner business leader admitted he was eager to see the UK continue to abide by EU regulation. He said: “We haven’t actually worked out what the best

way to leave yet is so the transition deal is absolutely essential. “My gut feeling is that we will find a sensible agreement that keeps us trading. “I wouldn’t rule out a customs union.”

However, one member of the audience was quick to smack down the business leader for trying to stop the UK taking back control of its ability to govern. He exclaimed: “You can’t have a hard

or a soft independence. “We don’t want some of our sovereignty back, we want all of our sovereignty back.” The angry rebuttal to the Siemens boss was met with a sudden outburst of applause

from other audience members also annoyed at his wish to keep the UK under European regulation. In a similar encounter with another questioner, Mr Maier found himself on the back foot when

trying to defend the EU after an audience member lashed out at the trade bloc for refusing to give the UK a good deal. The audience guest asked: “Do you think the EU are being very

co-operative?” QUESTION TIME: DIMBLEBY REFUSES TO ALLOW QUESTION ABOUT BREXIT In a desperate defence of the EU27 Mr Maier said the group still wanted to remain “friends” with the UK. He

said: “They didn’t want us to leave. “They are basically saying, look we’re terribly sorry but actually it is in our interest that we remain friends at the end of this.” Frustrated that the

businessman appeared more interested in friendship than the best deal for Britain, the audience member retorted: “But it’s not about remaining friends is it? BBC A second audience member

accused the businessman of needing to change his priorities “It’s about them giving us a deal.” The Siemens boss appeared taken aback by the answer and appeared to struggle to defend his

previous answer. Mr Maier has been Chief Executive of Siemens UK since July 2014. Since taking over in his role at the company he has been an avid supporter of the UK remaining in the EU.
