Britain continues to draw in more long-term immigrants than any other country based on population size. Some 498,000 immigrants came here in 2012, 0.77 per cent of the UK’s 60.8 million
population, according to Eurostat. France, Europe’s second most populous nation with 65.9 million people, had 327,000 immigrants arrive in 2012, a ratio of just 0.49 per cent of population.
The figures from the EU statistics arm heap further pressure on David Cameron to get a grip on immigration. Speaking yesterday the Prime Minister said: “We have made progress on immigration
from outside the EU. We promised a cap on the numbers, we’ve delivered that. “But in terms of EU migration, partly because Britain has become the jobs factory of Europe, and created 1,000
jobs every day, more than the rest of Europe put together, we have had an increase of migration from the EU.”
