BREXIT: DAVID CAMERON CONFRONTED ON THE 'TRUTH' OF HIS CAMPAIGN Speaking to an audience at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, Mr Cameron said he held regrets about setting a

public vote on the UK’s membership to the bloc. Mr Cameron has been promoting his anticipated political memoirs, titled ‘For The Record’, which were released in September. He said:

"I've always believed Britain was better off in because it was our single market where we can write the rules. RELATED ARTICLES "I've always been sceptic about the

political project, but I felt we had to be there in our national interest for jobs and growth." The former Prime Minister and Tory leader expressed regret for developments surrounding

Brexit – but said he “did not regret” holding the referendum in the first place. Mr continued "I am desperately sorry for what has happened, but I don't regret holding the

referendum as I believed it was inevitable. “Around that decision there are many decisions which could have been done differently or better, and I will agonise until the day I die over those

decisions. David Cameron was speaking to an audience at the Cheltenham Literature Festival (Image: GETTY) Mr Cameron resigns fro the post following the UK voting to leave the bloc (Image:

to follow. "We didn't have to have an election in 2017, the loss of a majority and choices made." As Current Prime Minister Boris Johnson battles with Brussels to take the UK

ARTICLES But despite this, Mr Johnson has stressed that no deal planning would be ramped up – and the Uk would leave the bloc with no agreement if necessary. Although Mr Johnson said he

would “rather be dead in a ditch” than extend Article 50, reports have claimed he is prepared to extend the period until January 2020. But Mr Cameron also said that a no deal scenario would

be “bad” for Britain. He told the audience: "You can probably never be certain just how disruptive it would be, but I think it would be disruptive, bad for the economy, bad for the

made various revelations since the publication of his political memoirs (Image: GETTY) "I don't think it is a proposition the Prime Minister should entertain for too long." Mr

Cameron insisted that although there was "political pressure" to hold a referendum from within the Conservative Party, he believed the EU's attitude to Britain made it

inevitable. "There hasn't been a day since the referendum result when I haven't worried about what's happened with the divisions, the difficulties and the lack of

progress we are making. "It is painful to watch, and I know I bear some responsibility for that because I held the referendum, and I lost the referendum. The key moments in the run up

to Brexit (Image: EXPRESS) “Some people will profoundly disagree with this but I thought it was better, as a prime minister who wanted to Britain in a reformed Europe, to try and tackle this

problem rather than put it off to the future." (20) Earlier in October, Mr Cameron was challenged on the "truthfulness" of claims the Remain campaign made ahead of the Brexit

referendum. The former Prime Minister conceded economic forecasts were not all correct. CNBC host Wilfred Frost asked the former Tory leader: "You say in your book that Boris Johnson

‘left the truth at home,’ with some of his campaignings. "At another point in the book, you say outright Leave ‘was lying.’ Can the British people trust their Prime Minister?" The

former Prime Minister said no deal would be "bad for the United Kingdom" (Image: GETTY) Mr Frost continued: "There’s lots of criticism about the Leave campaign that have

poured over every day for the past three years. "Was your campaign perfectly truthful?" Mr Cameron conceded parts of the predictions the Remain campaign had made in the run-up to

the European Union referendum turned out not to be true. The former Tory Prime Minister said: "We told the story as it was about Britain being better off and stronger and safer inside

the EU but we lost. You have to accept that. "I’m happy to say that while some of the forecast we made about the impact on the economy sadly have been borne out – we have not been

growing as fast as we had been – some of the forecasts we made turned out not to be the case and the economy is stronger than some thought. But generally, I think we fought a pretty accurate

campaign."
