Boris Johnson is the bookies’ to win the race, but when asked which world leader you would like to see become the next UK Prime Minister, you unanimously chose a good “friend” of the former
Foreign Secretary. The Express.co.uk poll, which ran from 4.36pm until 8.36pm yesterday, saw 3,826 votes cast, with Donald Trump dominating with a huge 72 percent share (2,751 votes).
Russian President Vladimir Putin was a distant second with just 11 percent (421 votes). Angela Merkel, who stepped down as leader of her CDU party in Germany at the end of last year and will
quit as as chancellor in 2021, completed the podium positions. She received four percent of the vote, with 145 votes - although she was technically pipped by the ‘Don’t Know’ option on six
percent (206). Justin Trudeau received three percent (110), the only other candidate to get more than 100 votes. Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, who has been heavily involved in Brexit
negotiations, particularly around the long-running issue of the Irish backstop, received just two percent of your vote (63). BORIS JOHNSON LEADERSHIP CAMPAIGN LAUNCH: WHAT DID BORIS SAY
ABOUT BREXIT? Shinzo Abe 37, Xi Jinping 36, Narenda Modi 27, Emmanuel Macron 18 and Pedro Sanchez in last place with 12. Express.co.uk readers were unanimous in their support for Mr Trump,
praising his fighting skills and history of defying authority to get what he wants. One said: “Trump actually fights for his own country unlike many of our MPs who seem to prefer fighting
for the EU and against the UK.” Another commented: “President Donald Trump as our PM he would get us our Brexit and clean up our country from all the dirt.” A third person said: “Trump
should get his ancestry citizenship and then run for PM once he's done with straightening out the US! Trump for PM!” In the days leading up to the US President’s three-day state visit
of the UK earlier this month, Mr Trump lavished praise on Mr Johnson, describing him as “a friend of mine” and a “very good guy”. Asked whether he would meet with either Mr Johnson or Brexit
Party leader Nigel Farage while in Britain, Mr Trump said: “I may. Nigel Farage is a friend of mine, Boris is a friend of mine, they’re two very good guys, very interesting people.” Mr
Trump had initially stopped short of backing the Tory leadership frontrunner becoming the new Prime Minister. He said: “Well I like them, I mean they’re friends of mine, but I haven’t
thought about supporting them. “Maybe it’s not my business to support people. But I have a lot of respect for both of those men.” Mr Trump has talked up Mr Johnson as a possible Prime
Minister before - during his “working visit” to the UK last July, in the wake of Mr Johnson’s resignation as Foreign Secretary, he told The Sun: “I like him a lot. I have a lot of respect
for Boris. “I was very saddened to see he was leaving government and I hope he goes back in at some point. “I think he is a great representative for your country.” Perhaps more surprising
was Vladimir Putin's second-place finish. Russia has been at loggerheads with the UK since the poisoning of former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in
Salisbury in March 2018. The UK was quick blame Russia for the attack in which the pair survived, but Russia has always furiously denied any involvement.
