High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than 25 per cent of all adults in the UK. The condition, which is also known as hypertension, puts extra stress on blood vessels

and vital organs. Left untreated, high blood pressure could develop into a deadly heart attack or stroke. But, eating a handful of sunflower seeds every day could help to avoid hypertension,

it’s been claimed. Sunflower seeds are a great source of magnesium, which may reduce your blood pressure, said nutritionist Joy Bauer. Magnesium works by dilating blood vessels, and

subsequently easing the flow of blood through the blood vessels. A handful of sunflower seeds could be enough to lower blood pressure - the equivalent to about 80g. “Control your blood

pressure by maintaining a healthy weight, limiting your salt intake, and eating heart-healthy foods,” said Bauer, on her website. “I often tell my clients to make nutritional changes at a

pace that feels comfortable to them. “The consequences of doing too little are severe — heart attack, stroke, pain, disability, and even death. “Sunflower seeds are also a great source of

magnesium. A quarter cup of these super seeds make a nutritious snack. “But be sure to buy them unsalted, since you’ll also want to minimise your sodium intake.” You could also lower your

blood pressure by eating other magnesium-rich foods, including leafy green vegetables, fish, dried fruit, and whole grains. Alternatively, you may want to consider adding magnesium

supplements to your daily routine. If you do take supplements, avoid taking more than 400mg in a single day, as it could be causing more harm than good. High blood pressure is often known as

‘the silent killer’, as you could have the condition without even knowing it. Patients only develop symptoms if they have extremely high blood pressure. Common high blood pressure symptoms

include severe headaches, finding blood in your urine, and having a pounding in your chest. Speak to a doctor or pharmacist to have your blood pressure checked, said the NHS. All adults over

40 years old should check their blood pressure at least every five years.
