Road safety experts at Westcotec says they are concerned many drivers will “ignore” hazards when they get behind the wheel. This is due to motorists not using their vehicles for weeks and
have urged every owner to “focus solely” on the road ahead. Police forces across the UK have already warned about increased levels of speeding as some drivers take advantage of the quieter
roads. GEM Motoring Assist road safety officer Neil Worth said it could be “lethal” if motorists are “over-optimistic” about their driving ability. He said: “We tend to be over-optimistic
about our level of driving skill, at the same time as telling ourselves that bad things happen to other people – and that can be a lethal combination. “That’s why we are urging everyone –
on every journey - to take personal responsibility for safety, banish distractions and focus solely on the task of driving.” Police officers can issue penalties such as fines and penalty
points for those believed to be distracted while behind the wheel. Motorists are likely to be issued a fine of £200 and up to six penalty points for using their mobile phone behind the
wheel. However, in some severe cases motorists may be issued a charge for dangerous driving which can see penalties drastically rise. If a case goes to court drivers could be issued up to
a £5,000 fine and nine penalty points on their driving licence. Road safety charity Brake has warned automated technology fitted inside vehicles could tempt drivers way from looking at the
road. The list of gadgets inside vehicles could lead to inattention such as a motorists mind wandering or fiddling with a tool. Brake have particularly focused on cruise control systems
which manufacturers warn must require driver attention at all times. Brake also warns common problems such as eating, drinking or smoking behind the wheel could all provide distractions for
road users. The group even claimed music could become a distraction for motorists with 60 percent of those surveyed revealing adjusting the radio is a slightly distracting task.
