The UK’s third biggest supermarket, owned by US giant Walmart, has suffered more than big four rivals Tesco, Sainsbury and Morrisons as expanding German chains Lidl and Aldi have increased

their UK market share rapidly.  Asda, whose pre-tax profit fell by nearly 19 per cent to £791.7 million last year, said same-store sales excluding petrol were up 1.8 per cent in the three

months to the end of June after takings jumped by 16 per cent over Easter.  Walmart chief, Doug McMillon, said: “Customers are responding to investments in price and store experience by

visiting more often and increasing their basket sizes.  "There’s still much more to be done but we’re clearly heading in the right direction.”
