But 2019 came and went without any indication on what Rockstar Games is working on next, and 2020 has so far followed this trend.
There have been a number of false dawns, with the rumour mill claiming that a GTA 6 reveal would be taking place in March.

However that month came and went without a single word from Rockstar Games on GTA 6.
Fans may be left wondering when exactly GTA 6 will be getting revealed, and whether any of the rumours we've heard so far are true or not.
GTA 6 is rumoured to be set in Vice City, could launch as early as 2020, and has been tipped to be a PS5 launch exclusive.
But since the latter is yet to be confirmed PS4 and Xbox One fans will surely be hoping GTA 6 will still yet arrive on their platforms.
And in the meantime fans have another upcoming date to look forward to when they hopefully will get some information on GTA 6.
There have been a number of curious things spotted in GTA 5 which fans have taken to be hints about GTA 6.

The most obvious, potential Easter Egg is in the Los Santos International Airport.
In that in-game locale there are three doors, which have 2013, 2014 and 2021 marked on them.
This is interesting as 2013 is the year GTA 5 first came out and 2014 is the year GTA 5 launched on the PS4 and Xbox One.
So fans have been left wondering if the door which says 2021 follows this pattern and hints at when GTA 6 will be arriving.
And that isn't the only potential GTA 6 hint Rockstar Games has dropped in the latest Grand Theft Auto game.
After the Diamond Casino update launched late last year fans noticed something peculiar.
The major December GTA update added the highly anticipated casino locale to Grand Theft Auto.
And inside the luxurious gambling den those trying to spot GTA 6 hints discovered something curious.
There is a corridor in the Diamond Casino which features eye-catching writing on the walls.
On one side of the corridor a wall features a sign that says 'SER' with the word 'VICE' underneath, while the other side has 'DIAMOND' and '510' below it.
GTA fans were left wondering if this was a subtle hint from Rockstar Games about GTA 6.
As the speculation goes, 'VICE' would obviously be a reference to Vice City - where the next Grand Theft Auto game is heavily rumoured to be set.
While '510' could refer to either the reveal date or release date of the next Grand Theft Auto game.
Is '510' a reference to when GTA 6 will be getting announced, which could be May 10?
Or is it alluding to a possible GTA 6 release date of October 10?
The next-gen consoles are pencilled in to launch during the holiday 2020 period, which is around when this date would fall.
Of course, this is just speculation from the community so it is unclear whether there will be a GTA 6 announcement this May.
TrendingOr whether, like with March, April and May will come and go without any official word on the next Grand Theft Auto game.
But Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar Games parent company Take Two, has previously spoken about new, inbound "iterations from beloved franchises".
During a recent earnings call Zelnick said: "So as we always do, you're going to hear our initial outlook for fiscal '21 in May, and our labels, of course, always make our product releases.
"We have set our strategy, as you correctly pointed out, is to have a strong frontline release schedule, both iterations from beloved franchises.
"We have 11 franchises that have sold in at least 5 million units within one release as well as new intellectual property, and we are working on the most robust pipeline in our history.
"That said, we haven't always been able to achieve our goal of having a strong frontline release schedule in every year, even in the recent past."
Prior to that Zelnick had spoken about Take Two's strongest development pipeline in history.
And Grand Theft Auto fans will surely be hoping that GTA 6 is at the forefront of this list of titles in the works.
