Netflix buys the wandering earth after $600million haul in two weeks

Taking more than $600million in just two weeks would thrill any Hollywood blockbuster. This movie, though, has done it all in one country. If there was ever any doubt of the emerging power

of the Chinese box office, this is is the ultimate proof. Suddenly the world, and Hollywood, has sat up and taken notice. The Wandering Earth looks set to be the first Asian blockbuster to

become a global phenomenon and British audiences can see it soon. The Mandarin movie came out on February 5 and has barely had a limited release outside China, but NETFLIX hasn't wasted

any time.  The streaming giant announced it has acquired the rights for its worldwide streaming services and will translate the science fiction epic into 28 languages for 190 countries.

Based on a book by Hugo Award-winning author Liu Cixin, the movie tells the heroic story of a desperate attempt to save the Earth in an apocalyptic near future. The sun has turned into a Red

Giant and a new united world government builds giant propulsion engines to move our planet out of the Solar System. Naturally, nothing goes to plan and a small band of heroes must mount one

last mission to save everyone and everything they love. Chinese audiences have embraced a story of global co-operation and a united humanity, but this will be the first time the rest of the

cinema-going public has seen a blockbuster on this scale where America is not saving the day. The director acknowledged his "surprise" the movie will now reach a far wider

audience. Frant Gwo said: “Audiences from over 190 countries will soon meet The Wandering Earth on Netflix. I am glad that our movie can reach to people from different parts of the world...

To my surprise, this movie also resonates outside Mainland China... I hope they will like it." A Netflix statement said: "Netflix is committed to providing entertainment lovers

with access to a wide variety of global content. With its high-quality production and story-telling, we believe that The Wandering Earth will be loved by Sci-Fi fans around the world.” As

yet, no date for transmission has been announced.
