Assisted dying campaign is gaining strength - the law must change"

Today's debate comes at a pivotal moment for the assisted dying movement.

As bills progress in neighbouring parliaments – Scotland, Jersey, the Isle of Man and France to name just a few – and with Dame Esther Rantzen’s government petition currently at 203,000

signatures, it is only right that MPs should be looking again at the current law which is cruel, dangerous and outdated.

We are at a tipping point; that is undeniable. Every single constituency in the country is supportive of law change on assisted dying.

From the Red Wall to the Blue Wall, voters want a better, safer, kinder law for dying people.

Ahead of the General Election, this is MPs’ final opportunity to show the 75% of voters across Britain who back reform that they are ready to pursue an assisted dying law that brings choice

and protection where there is presently far too little.

I want to pay tribute to the astonishing contribution of Dame Esther and her daughter Rebecca, who, despite all they are going through, have found the strength to use their experience to

empower others.

Like she always has, Dame Esther has been leading the charge on an issue that is close to the public’s heart.

Behind her stands a movement of people who will not rest until compassion and common-sense win out.

I want to issue a final call to MPs: You have an opportunity to listen to groundswell of voices demanding change, to the mounting evidence from around the world that these laws are safe and

compassionate, and to the dying people and their families who have been sharing their heart-wrenching experiences for years.

Today you can show voters that you will no longer defend a law that causes harm, but that you are prepared to support one that is fit for how we live and die in the 21st Century.
