Bask in boris's glow, says carole malone

It’s not one many in our virulently Remainer Parliament are chuffed about. But for the British people, who’ve had three yeas of hopelessness and handwringing, of doom and despondency, of

being bombarded with End of Days scenarios abut leaving the EU - we’re rejoicing that someone who believes in this country is finally running it. Boris is the force of nature Britain needs.

In just three days he’s wiped out three YEARS of Theresa May’s cowering, miserable, defeatist reign wth a tsunami of energy, optimism and his much trumpeted Do or Die spirit. And far from

being scared of it most of us just aren’t ready for it - we’re desperate for it. Finally, we have a leader who is talking this country up - not down. We have a PM who refused to be cowed by

the EU and who is determined to concentrate on what Britain can do, not what it can’t. Boris has re-lit the touch paper to Britain’s self-belief and it is gloriously infectious. I don’t know

if he really can get us out of the EU by October 31 but I want him to try with every fibre of his being. And so far, he’s doing exactly that. He’s sacked every cabinet minister who was

standing in the way of Brexit, which was most of them. And that wasn’t as brutal as his critics claim - you can’t deliver Brexit with people who’re determined to trash it. He’s told Brussels

“Bin the Backstop” or there’ll be No Deal. And he’s said they can sing for the £39bn which is OUR cushion if we’re forced to walk away. Whether he means it or not - THAT’s how you negotiate

with the arrogant, intransigent, bullying EU, which throughout its inglorious history has caved at the 11th hour when facing opponents who’ve had the guts say Up Yours! Theresa May never

did, so they crushed and humiliated her. In his first few days in office Boris has made it clear that’s not how it’ll be with him. I get that some think he’s a showman without substance but

we’ll know soon enough. He has 90-odd days to deliver Brexit and he’s also promised 20,000 more cops, to upgrade 20 hospitals and to end the nightmare of dementia care. So instead of

screaming “He can’t do it” let’s wait and see if he can. Boris has stated his premiership on a promise to get us out by October 31 and he knows what that means if he doesn’t deliver. ’Til

then, I want to bask in his dream of a Golden Age for Britain. I want to revel in the fact he’s brought life thundering back into a paralysed House of Commons. I want to be warmed by his

hope, his optimism and the energy he’s brought back into our politics. Michel Barnier says Boris’s Brexit stance is “combative”. Well good! About time we were combative instead of cowed.

Britain has got its reputation to salvage and for now we must hope that Boris is the man who can do it.
