A dark day that will blight democracy for decades, express comment

The Remainer coalition in Parliament, which includes Jeremy Corbyn's Labour, has conspired to collude with the EU leaders to force Mrs May and Britain into an impossible situation. By

taking no deal off the table they have not only removed the best chance for Britain to forge a profitable and successful future as an independent nation, but also left Mrs May with nothing

with which to negotiate. She and Britain were left humiliated in having to beg for an extension that nobody outside the Westminster elite wants and completely powerless in having to accept

whatever conditions the EU insist on. Yesterday was truly a dark day in British democracy. It is hard to think of a time in modern history where the reputation of this country has been so

low. A country which has proudly stood against tyranny and spread the democratic values of the free world is itself failing to defend its own freedom and democracy. There is no hope of

victory out of this mess. The extension means we will remain trapped under the rule of an undemocratic bureaucracy which has no interest in Britain's future. Worse still it seems

increasingly likely that the Remainers and EU leadership are getting into touching distance of cancelling Brexit. The long-term effects of this will poison our democracy for decades to come.

DRUG DEADLOCK MUST END WHILE the Prime Minister has been taking flak over Brexit, she showed yesterday why so many people admire her sense of public duty and willingness to tackle social

injustices. Theresa May's promise to take up the issue of the wonder drug being denied to cystic fibrosis sufferers is welcome. It is vital to save the lives of sufferers that some

political leadership is shown to help strike a deal for Orkambi with US firm Vertex. This impasse must end and we hope Mrs May's intervention decisively breaks the deadlock. DAME DARCEY
